## Sample source: Making Room

This morning I want to invite us to make room for one another. Hospitality can begin before we set a table or open a door. It can begin when we leave enough space in a conversation for someone else's story.

Imagine a visitor arriving early at a small gathering. Everyone seems to know where to sit and whom to greet. The visitor stands by the door, holding a coat, unsure whether to interrupt. One person notices, introduces themselves, and asks whether the visitor would like to sit with them. Nothing grand has happened. Someone has made the next step easier.

The illustration asks us to notice the moments when our familiar routines are unfamiliar to someone else. We may know where the coffee is, how the meeting works, or when questions are welcome. A newcomer may not. An invitation can offer a little clarity without asking that person to pretend they already belong.

Listening is another way to make room. We can ask a question and wait for the answer. We can resist turning every story into our own story. We can welcome a person's presence without claiming to understand everything they have experienced.

Our invitation this week is small: notice one opportunity to offer welcome. Say hello, explain a next step, or listen without rushing. As you reflect, ask yourself: whose experience of this gathering have I not considered? What would help them take the next step with confidence?
