Importing and Exporting Scripts

Import an existing script into your episode or export the current script as a text file.

Opening the Import/Export Menu

  1. In the episode workspace actions area (top right), click the three-dot menu icon (tooltip: Import / Export).
  2. A dropdown appears with three items:
    • Import Script
    • Export Script
    • Delete Episode

Importing a Script

  1. Click Import Script from the dropdown.
  2. The Import Script dialog opens with a text area and file upload option.
  3. Choose one of two methods:

Paste Text

Type or paste your script directly into the text area. The placeholder reads: "Paste your transcript here, or drag and drop a file..."

Upload a File

  • Drag and drop a file onto the dialog, or click Or Browse Files to select one.
  • Accepted formats: plain text (.txt, .md) and documents (.docx, .doc, .rtf, .pages, .pdf)
  • Maximum file size: 4 MB
  • Document files show a "Reading your document..." indicator while Jellypod extracts the text; plain text files load instantly

Reviewing Speakers

As soon as you paste text or add a file, Jellypod reviews it and lists every detected label before anything is imported. Each label shows a status:

  • Existing Host — the label matches a Host already in your account.
  • New Host — the label doesn't match an existing Host. It's created as a new Host automatically when you import.
  • Not a speaker — you've excluded this label. It stays visible with a strikethrough and is ignored on import.

For each label you can:

  • Edit name — rename it before importing. Renamed labels are re-checked against your existing Hosts when you import.
  • Not a Speaker — exclude a label that isn't really a speaker, such as a performance cue picked up from a bracketed line.
  • Start Over — appears once you've made changes, and resets the review to the original detection.

At least one speaker must stay active to import. Nothing is created in your account until you click Import Script.

  1. Click Import Script. If you edited or excluded any labels, Jellypod re-checks your corrected speakers against the script once more before importing; otherwise it imports the reviewed script directly.
  2. If your script is longer than your plan allows, Jellypod imports the portion that fits and shows a truncation notice with an option to upgrade.

Changing a Host Manually

After import, you can still reassign any block to a different Host from the script editor:

  1. Click the speaker name above the block.
  2. Pick a host from the list.

By default the Swap All Hosts? checkbox at the bottom of the picker is checked, so reassigning one block moves every block from that speaker to the host you choose. To change only the selected block, uncheck Swap All Hosts? before picking. Jellypod remembers your choice for next time.

Exporting a Script

  1. Click Export Script from the dropdown.
  2. A .txt file downloads automatically, named after your episode title.
  3. The exported file includes speaker labels in brackets before each speech block:
[Host Name]
The speech block text goes here.

[Other Host]
Their dialogue follows here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What format should my script be in for importing?

For best results, use speaker names in brackets on their own line (e.g., [John Doe]) with their speech on the next line, or leave it as plain prose. Jellypod detects speakers either way. Plain text (.txt, .md) and document files (.docx, .doc, .rtf, .pages, .pdf) are accepted, up to 4 MB. Document files are converted to text before the speaker review, which can take a few seconds.

Will importing a script replace my existing one?

Yes. Importing a script replaces the current script content.

What's the difference between 'Existing Host' and 'New Host' in the speaker review?

'Existing Host' means the detected label matches a Host already in your account. 'New Host' means it doesn't match one and is created automatically when you import. You can rename a label or mark it 'Not a Speaker' before importing if either isn't right.

How many new Hosts can one import create?

At most four. If your script introduces more than four new speakers, the extra speakers' lines are assigned to the first new Host the import created instead of getting a Host of their own.

A performance cue like [Laugh] shows up as a speaker in the review. What do I do?

Jellypod usually recognizes cues like this automatically and folds them into the surrounding line. If one still shows up in the review, mark it 'Not a Speaker' in the Review Speakers step. It stays visible with a strikethrough and is excluded on import. To direct delivery instead, use the supported audio tags.

I assigned a host to one block and it changed every block. How do I stop that?

The host picker has a 'Swap All Hosts?' checkbox that's on by default, so reassigning one block moves every block from that speaker at once. Uncheck 'Swap All Hosts?' before picking a host to change only the selected block.
