Voice Design: generate a custom voice from a backstory

Voice Design generates a custom voice from a character's name and backstory, so you don't have to search for a match. It is part of Characters and Voices, available in the character wizard when you create a character and when you edit one in Managing Characters.

How to use it

1. Complete the Name and Backstory steps.
2. On the Voice Type step, select Voice Library.
3. On the Voice Library step, click Voice Design (sparkle icon), then Generate Voice.
4. Review the Voice Description and the Voice Previews, play each one, select your favorite, and click Use This Voice.

A toast confirms "Voice design created!" and the new voice is selected for the character. To pick an existing voice instead, see Browsing the Voice Library.

Language Detection

Voice Design detects the language your backstory is written in and uses it as the voice's Dominant language (see Dominant language and host warnings). It goes by the text itself, not by any nationality, location, or accent the backstory mentions, so write the backstory in the language you want the voice tuned for. If the language can't be determined, it defaults to English.

Best results

A detailed backstory gives the best match: personality, background, communication style, and expertise. Click Enhance Backstory on the Backstory step before using Voice Design.

If the previews don't fit, click Regenerate Previews for a new set from the same backstory. If they still miss, add detail to the backstory and generate again.

Limits and errors

• Each organization can have up to 50 active characters using a designed voice. At the limit, Use This Voice shows "Maximum of 50 voice designs reached."
• If generation is blocked by safety filters, the error reads "Content blocked by safety filters. Please try again with different input." Change the backstory and retry.
• After you use a voice, the Voice Design button is disabled for that wizard session.
