Create a character with AI or manually

Characters are reusable personas that fill host roles across your workspace (see Characters and Voices). To start, click Characters and Voices in the sidebar, then New Character. The New Character dialog offers two options.

Generate with AI

Describe your character in the text box (for example, "A warm, curious science educator who explains complex topics clearly"), then click Generate character. Jellypod writes the name, backstory, and personality, picks a voice, and opens the new character's page.

Create Manually

Fill in the form:

• Avatar: Optional. JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP, up to 10 MB.
• Name: Required, up to 100 characters.
• Title (optional): A short descriptor such as "Tech Journalist," up to 100 characters.
• Description: Backstory and point of view, 10 to 3,000 characters.
• Personality (optional): Communication style and traits.
• Voice: Required. Select a row in the Voice Library list, which pages through voices five at a time. To search and preview first, see Browsing the Voice Library.

Click Create character to save and open the character's page. The button stays disabled until the required fields are valid.

The quick form only offers Voice Library voices. To clone your own voice, attach reference materials, or set a Voice Style, create the character first, then edit it: see Voice Cloning and Managing Characters. To design a voice from a backstory, also create the character first, then edit it: see Magic Voice Design.

From the Voice Library

On the Explore tab, click Use This Voice next to a voice. The manual form opens with that voice already selected and shown on its own, in place of the voice list.

From a host picker

Host pickers for podcasts, episodes, videos, shorts, voiceovers, and automations have a + button (labeled New Character) beside the search field. It opens the same dialog without leaving what you're doing.

Creating a character this way takes you to the new character's page and does not select it. Reopen the picker to choose it.

The exception is the episode host picker's empty state. If you have no characters, it shows a Create Character button, and the character you create there is selected as an episode host right away.

Character limit

Your plan sets how many AI characters you can keep, see plan limits. At the limit, creating another character opens an upgrade dialog titled "You've reached your character limit". Archiving or deleting a character frees a slot.
