Pronunciation Guide: fix how hosts say names and terms

The Pronunciation Guide tells your characters how to say names, brands and technical terms they get wrong. Rules apply to your whole workspace, across all podcasts and to Magic Video, Shorts and Voiceovers, and they take effect the next time audio is generated.

How a rule works

Each rule holds one word or phrase and two forms of its pronunciation:

• Spelling: the word written the way it sounds, like "keen-wah" for quinoa.
• IPA: the same sound in the International Phonetic Alphabet, like "kiːnwɑː".

You write one and Jellypod fills in the other. When audio is generated, Voices that read IPA get the IPA form and every other Voice gets the spelling. Rules you add in Studio match regardless of capitalization.

Where to find it

Click Pronunciations in the sidebar for the full page. The same guide opens as a dialog from the Pronunciations button in the script editor and in the narration editor of the video editor.

The table has four columns: Word or Phrase, Phonetic Spelling (with the IPA form underneath once it has one), Last Updated and Actions. The first three sort.

Add a pronunciation

1. Click New Pronunciation.
2. In Word or Phrase, enter the word to match, like "Quinoa".
3. Next to Pronunciation, choose Spelling or IPA and write it. For IPA, leave out the slashes.
4. Click Add Pronunciation.

Saving takes a few seconds while Jellypod writes the other form. If it can't produce an IPA form from your spelling, the rule still saves and every Voice uses the spelling.

Preview a pronunciation

Click the speaker icon in the Actions column and pick a character from the searchable list. The preview uses the same form that character's Voice gets during generation, so a Voice that reads IPA plays the IPA form. Characters whose Voice is no longer available appear in the list but can't play a preview.

Edit or delete a rule

Use the edit icon in Actions, change the spelling or switch to IPA and change that, then click Save. Jellypod rewrites the other form to match. If you only change the word, both forms stay as they are. The delete icon removes a rule after you confirm.

Troubleshooting

A word is still mispronounced. A new or edited rule doesn't change audio you have already generated. Regenerate that block with Regenerate Audio. If it still sounds wrong, rewrite the rule in the other notation (IPA for a tricky sound, or a simpler hyphenated spelling) and preview it with the character who speaks the line.
