Pronunciation Guide: fix how hosts say names and terms

The Pronunciation Guide tells your characters how to say names, brands and technical terms they get wrong. Rules apply to your whole workspace, across all podcasts and to Magic Video, Shorts and Voiceovers, and they take effect the next time audio is generated.

How a rule works

Each rule holds one word or phrase and a pronunciation, written as one of two forms:

• Spelling: the word written the way it sounds, like "keen-wah" for quinoa.
• IPA: the same sound in the International Phonetic Alphabet, like "kiːnwɑː".

Whichever form you write is the rule's source; Jellypod generates the other form from it. When audio is generated, Voices that read IPA get the IPA form and every other Voice gets the spelling. Rules you add in Studio match regardless of capitalization, match whole words only, and a longer match wins over a shorter one inside it (a rule for "York" doesn't touch "New York").

Adding or editing a rule only flags the lines that use its word as needing new audio, so the rest of your episode stays untouched.

Where to find it

Click Pronunciations in the sidebar for the full page. The same guide opens as a dialog from the Pronunciations button in the script editor and in the narration editor of the video editor.

The table has four columns: Word or Phrase, Pronunciation (the form you wrote, with the generated form underneath), Last Updated and Actions. The first three sort.

Add a pronunciation

1. Click New Pronunciation.
2. In Word or Phrase, enter the word to match, like "Quinoa".
3. Next to Pronunciation, choose Spelling or IPA and write it. For IPA, leave out the slashes.
4. Leave Generate IPA for improved performance on, or turn it off if the IPA form sounds wrong for this word.
5. Click Add Pronunciation.

Saving takes a few seconds while Jellypod generates the other form. If that generation fails, the rule still saves with just the form you wrote.

With Generate IPA for improved performance off, Jellypod skips the IPA form and every Voice reads your spelling instead, even Voices that otherwise read IPA. Turn it back on and save to have Jellypod derive the IPA form again.

Preview a pronunciation

Click the speaker icon in the Actions column and pick a character from the searchable list. The preview uses the same form that character's Voice gets during generation, so a Voice that reads IPA plays the IPA form. Characters whose Voice is no longer available appear in the list but can't play a preview.

Edit or delete a rule

Use the edit icon in Actions. The dialog opens on the form you originally wrote, with the generated form shown beneath it. Change that value, or switch to the other notation and write a new one to make it the source instead, then click Save. Jellypod regenerates the other form to match. If you only change the word, both forms stay as they are. Generate IPA for improved performance also toggles here; turning it off after a rule already has an IPA form keeps that form saved but unused. The delete icon removes a rule after you confirm.

Troubleshooting

A word is still mispronounced. A new or edited rule doesn't change audio you have already generated. Regenerate that block with Regenerate Audio. If it still sounds wrong, rewrite the rule in the other notation (IPA for a tricky sound, or a simpler hyphenated spelling) and preview it with the character who speaks the line.

The IPA form sounds worse than the spelling. Edit the rule and turn off Generate IPA for improved performance, then save. Every Voice uses your spelling instead; the rule's IPA form stays saved but unused, so you can turn it back on later.
